Upon your return home you may find that things are different than when you originally left. This may come as a shock to the individual because people usually expect to be totally familiar with their place of residency. This phenomenon occurs when you return home to find that things have changed dramatically and are not like how you left. You may also have idealized and created high standards for when you return home and are let down upon re-entry.

 

Feelings You May Experience:

When reality fails to meet the expectations you have set in place you may experience feelings of frustration, alienation, and disengaged. These emotions vary from person to person, but most often these feelings stem from discomfort and disappointment. It is important that you educate about what is happening in your local community so you will know what to expect. You may also feel underappreciated or that nobody cares when you return back to work. This happens when your employer does not you utilize your newly acquired skills and fellow employees lack interest in what you’ve accomplished.

 

How to Avoid It:

In order to avoid feelings of disillusionment you and your family will need to read up on the latest news and politics occurring in your home country. You will need to begin the process before your departure home and it is encouraged to stay up to date throughout the assignment. To avoid being underutilized at work you should contact your employer and set up a meeting to discuss what you have learned. Discuss the highlights of the assignment and showcase the new skills and knowledge you have learned. By doing so, your employer will understand how much you have grown professionally and should assist you in additional career development.

HOW TO AVOID REVERSE CULTURE SHOCK

During your stay in Panama many changes may have occurred in your parent country. Most people assume that as citizens they will have no problem transitioning back into their old way of life. This is not always true, and depending on the length of your stay abroad, many changes may have occurred within the economy, politics, and in the community. It is important that you continuously educate yourself and read up on current news at both the local and federal level. By doing so you will reduce your chances of experiencing reverse culture shock. Reverse culture shock occurs when re-entry into the home country actual causes feelings of stress and anxiety.
